Insulated glazing, more commonly known as double glazing is double or triple glass window panes separated by a vacuum or gas filled space to reduce heat transfer across a part of the building envelope.
There is some debate about who first designed the Sash Window. However, there is strong evidence to suggest that their concept was first introduced by the famous and slightly controversial British inventor, Robert Hooke. Hooke travelled widely in Europe, particularly in Holland and France. In fact the word, ‘sash,’ comes from the French, ‘chassis,’ meaning frame. In 1666 Hooke was employed as the, ‘Surveyor in Charge,’ after the Great Fire of London. This period of re-building in London was instrumental in pioneering the first widespread use of Sash Windows in the UK. Hooke was commissioned by Sir Christopher Wren for this work. The Victorians, and after them the Georgians, found that Sash Windows fitted perfectly with their lavish architectural designs.
How will the Sash Brush Draught Pile System improve comfort levels in my home? The biggest benefit of replacement windows is not the fact that they are double glazed but the fact there is no air leakage around the perimeter of the window. There is no doubt that double glazed units increase the thermal efficiency of the windows, however, the biggest increase in comfort levels occurs as a result of there being no air leakage. At The Traditional Sash Company we install our Sash Brush Pile System into your sash windows, which will eliminate gaps, making it easier to maintain a comfortable room temperature and resulting in a more energy efficient home.
